Golf Course History

As members of the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club, you are part of a proud history stretching back over 100 years. It started on July 4, 1914, when a nine-hole course, designed by architect Tom Bendelow, opened on the east side of Garrison Forest Road. It continued in 1930 when, under the supervision of architect Herbert Strong, two new par three holes, today’s Holes 1 and 18, were constructed “on the clubhouse lawn.” One of the two original par three holes was abandoned, resulting in a ten-hole course. Holes 2 through 9 were played twice to complete a round of 18.

The history of Golf at GSVHC reached a major milestone on October 19, 1957, when, as reported in the Baltimore Sun, we debuted our current 18-hole layout, designed by famed architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. There have been other milestones, and a lot more history made on your Golf Course since then, some of it by you; maybe even today.

The next milestone arrived to our Club on May 16th, 2019, as golf course architect Tyler Rae presented a new Master Plan for the Golf Course that he created after hours of research, reviewing Jones’ original drawings, inspecting Jones courses in the U.S. and Europe, walking and re-walking each hole of our course, and meeting with the Golf Committee. When implemented, Tyler’s Plan will improve playability for members of all ages and skill levels, enhance the natural beauty of our property, and restore signature features from Robert Trent Jones’ design.

While Tyler’s Master Plan marks the beginning of the next chapter in GSVHC’s proud golf history, we thought it only fitting to take a look back at our long legacy of golf. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the newly formed Heritage Committee much of our club’s history has been rediscovered. Below you will find a series of posters honoring the incredible golf accomplishments and legacy of our members.
